Gemeindezentrum St. Dionysius (St. Dionysius Parish Centre)

The day school (10 a.m.—4.30 p.m., with breaks) will be held at intermediate/advanced level by

Please provide your own lunch. During the intermission between the Day School and Social Dance, you may wish to visit one of the various restaurants in the vicinity. There will be a (modest) cake buffet during the intermission at the Social Dance.
Prices are as follows (payable at the door):
| Day School and Social Dance: | EUR 15 |
| Social Dance only: | EUR 10 |
Admission to the Social Dance includes cake. Beverages will be sold at reasonable prices at the venue during the Day School as well as the Social Dance.
As the number of places is limited, please register online (or phone Eva Schiedrum on +49(0)6031-6843523) by 2 October 2008.
We are looking forward to have you join us for this special event!
Eva Schiedrum
and the Frankfurt Scottish Country Dance Club
Duncan Keppie, of Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada, has been dancing and teaching in Scotland, Canada, the USA, Mexico, and places as far afield as Hawaii, Zambia, and New Zealand for over 40 years. He has published many dance books and is a sought-after Scottish dance accordionist with several recordings to his credit.
Christine Moos is a talented young fiddler from Königswinter, Germany. She has played for many balls — notably in Frankfurt —, dance workshops, and ceilidhs in Germany and continental Europe and is also in demand for Klezmer concerts and Argentinian tango. Recently she has taken to the stage as part of »Green Grow the Rashes, O«, a celebration of the poetry and song of Robert Burns.
Anselm Lingnau plays the piano at dance workshops and functions. Based in Friedberg, Germany, he also teaches the Frankfurt SCD Club.

St. Dionysius Parish Centre is conveniently reached by suburban rail (S-Bahn) S1 (Hanau to Wiesbaden), alighting at Sindlingen (every 30 minutes from Frankfurt-Hauptwache, departures 8 minutes after the hour/half hour). From the station there is approximately a 10-minute walk: Leave the station towards the south, follow Sindlinger Bahnstrasse crossing Hoechster-Farben-Strasse at the roundabout and continue along Sindlinger Bahnstrasse (past the REWE store/Hotel Post) to the Alexander pharmacy (the bus stops 50 metres from here). Turn left and then right into Huthmacherstrasse and continue for about 150 metres to the Parish Centre.
By bus 54 (every 15 minutes) from Sindlingen station to Westenbergerstrasse or, using a no. 55 bus (every 30 minutes) from Industriepark Höchst, Tor West (West Gate) also to Westenbergerstrasse.
By car it is also straightforward: Go to Hoechster-Farben-Strasse and exit the roundabout south into Sindlinger Bahnstrasse. See walking directions above for the rest. Limited parking is available in Huthmacherstrasse or at the Meister-Park on the river Main (turn left at the south end of Huthmacherstrasse).
Q. What do you mean by »intermediate/advanced level«?
A. This is of course tricky to nail down, but we would wish for the following:
Familiarity with basic steps
Familiarity with basic formations like crossing, casting, turning, hands across, hands round, rights and lefts, grand chain and ladies' chain, allemande, poussette, reels of three, reels of four, and the ability to join these together
Rudiments of English as required for Scottish dancers (Duncan does not speak German). The day school will be taught in English.
Q. My English isn't so good. Can I still come?
A. The class will be taught in English, there's no way around that ... but as long as you know the names of the more important formations and the numbers up to eight you should be able to get along. In a pinch, there will always be people to translate or help out.
(If you're reading this you should of course be fine. However, you may be wondering on behalf of friends whose English isn't as good as yours.)
Q. Will dances be walked through during the social dance?
A. No, but the programme will consist, for the most part, of very familiar dances. All dances will of course be recapped.
Q. Will any dances form the social dance be practiced during the day school?
A. If so, that's purely by accident :^) It is up to Duncan which dances he will teach in class, and we don't want to impose any constraints on him. As we said, the programme for the social dance will consist, for the most part, of very familiar dances.
Q. Is there a dress code for the day school/social dance?
A. For the day school is concerned, wear whatever you would be wearing to a dance class (i.e., something comfortable and loose-fitting). Eva says »A social dance is usually less formal than a ball, but of course somewhat more festive than a regular class evening during the week«. That is, a skirt and blouse or a simple summer dress for the ladies and a white (or »peasant«) shirt for the gents would be appreciated, but the ball gowns, white dresses with a sash, and Bonnie Prince Charlie jackets can stay at home as far as we are concerned. However, we don't want to keep anybody who wants to from dressing up!
Q. Where can we go to eat?
A. At the day school, we will make available a list of restaurants with directions and phone numbers. Depending on when these places open, it will probably be possible to reserve tables for groups. The watchword is »initiative«. We don't know the situation in Sindlingen that well, either, and can't offer insider tips. We would, however, be glad to hear where you went and whether that would serve as an insider tip for similar events. (We will, of course, keep the real insider tips in the strictest confidence :^))
Q. Why don't we just have everyone order pizza?
A. We've seen that in other places and we're not in favour of the chaos, the inevitable delays, and the mountains of garbage. Besides, not everybody likes pizza (or Italian food in general — even though today's Italian places seem to offer anything from Indian to Mexican food ...). We think that with a long break, everybody can cater to their own tastes as far as cuisine, atmosphere, and cost is concerned and we don't have the administrative hassle (we still need to recover from our 40th Ball ...).
Q. Do you offer private hospitality?
A. We will likely be able to arrange for limited sleeping bag space with members of the group. Please get in touch with Eva ASAP (29 September, at the very latest) and tell her whether you need to be put up from Friday to Saturday and/or Saturday to Sunday.
