21 January 2017: 9th BCCG Burns Supper
The British Chamber of Commerce in Germany's annual Burns supper remains a known quantity in the Frankfurt “social calendar”. This year we participated once more as “dance facilitators”.
Like every year, nearly 150 businesspeople and other notables from the German/British scene congregated in the freemason's lodge, “Zur Einigkeit”, for a fine Scottish dinner (this time, cock-a-leekie soup, haggis with neeps and tatties – very traditional – and cranachan for desert) and the customary Burns liturgy, presented today by Neil Macgillivray (Address to the Haggis), Alison Walker (Immortal Memory), Paul Cowlan (Toast to the Lassies) and Heekyung Susie Kil Lim (Response by the Lassies). The ensuing ceilidh was, as usual, ably presented by Craig Herbertson, and musical entertainment (except for dancing) was provided by piper René Cornelius and drummer Julia Tellez Duarte of the Frankfurt Clan Pipers.
After the dinner and speeches it seemed to us that the guests stormed the dance floor with particular élan to join the traditional dances such as the Gay Gordons, The Dashing White Sergeant, or St Bernard's Waltz. Anselm as the “caller” and the four supporters – Birgit, Johanna, Marie and Dirk – had a lot of fun (as had the other guests) and the evening closed almost too early in a big circle with “Auld Lang Syne”.
